The Traunstein is the highest mountain on the east bank of the Traunsee in the district of Gmunden in the Salzkammergut. The height above Sealevel is 1691 metres high. It looks a little bit like a boulder in the landscape and with its distinctive silhouette the Traunstein is visible from a great distance, sometimes with clear view, we can see it from home.
To my family it is a bit of a "Hausberg", the "backyard mountain". We still have just over an hour drive to get there, but it probably is the closest "real" mountain - meaning a bit of experience and practise would not hurt to make yourself on the journey to climb it.
My brothers started a bit of a tradition in walking up this hill every year at the end of the hiking season - usually on the "All Saints"-Day, 1st of November. This year after a long time overseas I was part of it and LOVED it - I nearly forgot over the years what it means to hike up a "real mountain", and it felt good - although it was very exhausting as well.
But what a great feeling when reaching the top. Full of Happiness, and being quite content with the decision of returning home.
